Degree project - Paper chemistry: Retention and drainage

Job description

Goal
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the effect of different paper chemicals on retention and water drainage.

Background
At Billerud, we are convinced that working together with other companies, universities and research institutes is the best way to tap into new thinking concerning improved packaging materials in a circular approach. The purpose of the department Innovation, Product and Application Development (IPAD) is to create new materials that can replace fossil-based materials with more sustainable alternatives based on forest raw materials. The major challenge for cellulosic materials is to improve certain properties, such as extensibility, strength or barriers to water vapour and other gases and to produce these materials in a resource and energy efficient way.

Within the paper chemistry area, the following challenge has been identified:

When producing paper and paper board both process and functional chemicals are used. The process chemicals are important for an efficient production of paper and paperboard, and the functional chemicals give the products specific properties. Retention of fines, i.e. small fiber fragments, and different additives, is important to run a paper machine efficiently and can be controlled by using retention chemicals. These chemicals will also change the drainage of the wet web during forming. In this degree project a Dynamic Drainage Analyzer (DDA) will be used to study retention and drainage using different paper chemicals. Laboratory paper sheets will also be prepared for testing different properties.

Project
The work that will be carried out involves the following activities:

  • Literature study on paper chemistry with focus on retention and drainage
  • Laboratory test of different paper chemicals using DDA
  • Preparation of laboratory paper sheets for testing of different properties

Location
Location is at Billerud mill in Frövi.

Profile

To be able to successfully contribute in this degree project, we believe that you are a master student in physics, chemical engineering or equivalent. To be able to carry out the practical part of the degree project, you need to be present in our laboratories at Frövi.

Our values are central in our business and we believe that you recognize yourself in: we care for each other and we do what we say.
